On dieting and fiber

Achieving ideal body weight is not about dieting or food deprivation. It's about eliminating excessive hunger, stabilizing blood sugar levels and increasing the feelings of pleasure and satisfaction from food. A key tool in helping people achieve these goals is the use of a newly developed matrix of soluble fibers known as PolyGlycoPlex, or PGX-the most viscous and soluble fiber ever discovered.

For example, PGX is able to bind roughly 600 times its weight in water, resulting in a volume and viscosity three to five times greater than other highly soluble fibers like psyllium or oat beta glucan. To put this in perspective, a small, 5 g serving of PGX produces a volume and viscosity that would be equal to as much as four or five bowls of oat bran, keeping you feeling full longer and giving your body a consistent energy source.

In this way, small quantities of PGX, taken before meals, can have an impact on appetite and blood-sugar control equivalent to eating enormous and impractical quantities of any other form of fiber.

PGX stabilizes blood sugar levels

Research has shown that people who are overweight spend much of their day on a virtual "blood sugar roller coaster." New clinical research has shown that excessive appetite and food cravings in overweight subjects are a direct result of rapid fluctuations in blood glucose throughout the day and night. By utilizing PGX, these same subjects can restore their body's ability to control blood sugar levels, which is linked to remarkable decrease in insulin sensitivity and reductions in calories consumed.

Figure 2: Controlled and balanced blood sugar levels of the same woman after consuming PGX for 6 weeks and experiencing a healthy weight loss of two pounds per week.

PGX is based on clinical success

The development of PGX began with intense scientific research at the University of Toronto, led by the developers of the glycemic index. Further research has now shown that PGX can reduce the glycemic index of virtually any food by a 35 to 70 percent.

Detailed studies in both humans and animals have shown that PGX is very safe and well tolerated. There are no specific drug interactions, but it is advised to take any medication either an hour before or after taking PGX.

How to use PGX

Start slowly, ingesting one or two capsules before major meals, and adding a few more between meals if your appetite is more difficult to tame. Slowly increase your intake, gradually adding a few grams every 2-3 days until portion size and between-meal food cravings are decreased. Don't forget to drink 8-12 oz of water every time you take PGX.

PGX is available from Natural Factors in a variety of different forms: soft gelatin capsules (PGX Ultramatrix), a zero-calorie drink mix, granules to be added into food and beverages and as the SlimStyles Weight Loss Drink, a sophisticated low-carbohydrate, very-low-glycemic index meal-replacement drink containing undenatured whey protein, natural flavors and sweeteners along with vitamins and minerals. For many people, simply taking PGX in soft gelatin capsules 5-15 minutes before meals with a glass of water is the most convenient way to take PGX.
