St. John's wort is a yellow-flowering perennial plant that grows wild in many parts of the world. It was named after St. John the Baptist because it is usually in full bloom by the time of the Feast Day of St. John, June 24. "Wort" is the Old English word for "plant." Flora's St. John's wort supplements are wild-crafted from flowers grown exclusively in the mountains of southern Greece.
For centuries, the Greeks have referred to the plant as "basalmo" or "healing balm." In traditional herbalism, the use of the plant dates back at least 2,500 years. Hippocrates, the ancient Greek physician, is known to have recommended St. John's wort for "nervous unrest." In the Western world, Hippocrates (460 B.C. - 370 B.C.) is considered the founder of the medical profession.
Throughout the history of folk medicine, St. John's wort has been regarded as a mild anti-depressant. Among its many traditional applications, it has been used topically to treat injuries to the skin. Today, in many European countries, St. John's wort is routinely prescribed by physicians for mild depression, fatigue and sleeplessness.*
Flora uses the time-honored natural methods of producing St. John's wort extract, without chemicals or solvents. The mature golden flowers of wild St. John's Wort plants are harvested manually in the mornings, and are submersed that day in extra virgin olive oil, cold-pressed from certified organic olives. This mixture, sealed in glass jars, is then potentized in the intense Mediterranean sun for several weeks. It is this slow, painstaking process alone which maximizes the extraction into the oil of the full spectrum of active ingredients found in St. John's wort such as hypericin, hyperforin, rutin and quercetin, natural antioxidant.*
