Repel bugs, not your health
According to the Centers for Disease Control, 3,630 human cases of West Nile Virus were reported in the U.S. in 2007. Since insect repellents can have negative side effects and toxic ingredients, you might want to consider alternative products to protect yourself from the bugs.
DEET (di-ethyl-toluomide), a common and controversial chemical repellent, is found in popular brands like Off! and cutter. The EPA classifies DEET as "slightly toxic," so consider the following options if you prefer to avoid it.
- Wear long sleeves and pants outside during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
- Use essential oil-based formulations containing citronella, lemongrass and eucalyptus such as Quantum Buzz Away or All Terrain's insect repellent.
- Use soy-based formulations such as Bite Blocker from Homs, LLC, found by the New England Journal of Medicine to be as effective as a DEET insect repellent.
- Apply WishGarden Herbal Remedies' Bug Spray to repel mosquitoes.
