It’s important for you and your family to stay up to date on vaccinations that may be necessary to protect you from diseases that are still common in many parts of the world. Below is some information on vaccinations that are routinely recommended for travelers. (Find out more about vaccinations recommended based on your destination from the CDC.) While we do offer vaccinations for flu, shingles, whooping cough and pneumonia on a walk-in basis at all of our pharmacies, the following vaccinations must be requested in advance, and are available in New Mexico, Oregon and Washington. All vaccinations except Yellow Fever are available in Colorado.
Typhoid Fever (Learn more about Typhoid Fever and the vaccine) This potentially life-threatening illness is found in most parts of the world except for industrialized areas such as the US, Canada, Western Europe, Australia and Japan. Pharmaca offers two types of vaccines for Typhoid Fever—an injectable form and an oral form.
Hepatitis A (Learn more about Hepatitis A and the vaccine) According to the CDC, Hep A is one of the most common vaccine-preventable infections acquired during travel. Risk is higher for travelers going to rural areas, doing backcountry treks or eating and drinking in areas with poor sanitation. The virus causes acute liver disease and inflammation that leads to symptoms including abdominal pain, fatigue and jaundice. At least one vaccination is recommended prior to travel, but a second, administered 6-12 months after the first, is best for long-term protection.
Hepatitis B (Learn more about Hepatits B and the vaccine) The CDC recommends that all unvaccinated people received the Hepatitis B vaccine when traveling to areas with an intermediate or high prevalence of chronic hepatitis B. Hepatitis B can cause a range of symptoms, from mild illness to a serious long-term infection that can sometimes lead to chronic liver disease and liver cancer. Because this injectable vaccine is administered in a three-dose series, it should be started at least 6 months before traveling. Pharmaca does offer Twinrix, a combination vaccine for both Hepatitis A and B.
Meningitis (Meningococcal Disease) (Learn more about Meningitis and the vaccine) The CDC recommends vaccination against meningitis for people who travel to countries where Neisseria meningitides, the bacteria that causes meningococcal disease, is common, especially in areas of central Africa (called the "Meningitis Belt"). Proof of vaccination is also required for people traveling to Mecca for yearly pilgrimages. One vaccination is required, and should be administered at least 10 days in advance of travel.
Tdap: Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis (Read more about these illnesses and their vaccines) A complete round of vaccinations for these three diseases is recommended for all children under 7, and booster shots are often recommended for adults before travel (tetanus specifically should be revaccinated every 5-10 years).
Rabies (Read more about the rabies and the vaccine) This viral infection is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected animal, most often raccoons, skunks, bats, foxes and dogs. The risk for contracting rabies is higher in countries without adequate animal vaccination strategies in place. The CDC especially recommends a rabies pre-exposure vaccine when travelers know they will be in contact with animals, are going to a country where rabies is common or will be in remote areas without access to adequate medical care.
Varicella (Read more about varicella and the vaccine) The varicella vaccine has been used since 1995 to inoculate people against the chickenpox disease, which is highly contagious and uncomfortable. The CDC recommends two doses of the varicella vaccine for adults and children who have not contracted the disease, and especially for international travelers.
Yellow Fever is most commonly transmitted via the bite of an infected mosquito, and vaccination is recommended for travel to sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America.
Risk for acquiring yellow fever is dependent on your travel destination and season of travel; for example, according to the CDC, Yellow Fever has an elevated risk of transmission in West Africa during the end of rainy season, usually July to October. The risk for Yellow Fever infection in South America, on the other hand, tends to increase between January and March. Many countries require proof of vaccination for those eligible to receive the vaccine. The vaccination is administered as a single injection, and the World Health Organization requires revaccination at 10-year intervals.
Please note that Yellow Fever vaccinations are only available through a Pre-Travel Consultation, available only in California, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington.
Malaria is a major world health problem—an estimated 350-500 million people are infected each year, leading to approximately 1 million deaths annually. The presence of malaria is fairly widespread, as well: According to the CDC, it's found in Africa, Central and South America, parts of the Caribbean, Asia (including South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East), Eastern Europe and the South Pacific. All types of malaria are transmitted by mosquito bite, so the CDC recommends mosquito avoidance as the most important preventive measure. But malaria chemoprophylaxis medications are also widely prescribed, and include use of medication before, during and after travel to an area with malaria. While there is currently no vaccine that prevents malaria, many effective chemoprophylaxis options are available, including chloroquine, atovaquone-proguanil, doxycycline and mefloquine. Do I need an appointment to receive a consultation or vaccination? Yes, appointments are required for all pre-travel consultations and vaccinations.
Can I get vaccine advice over the phone? We are unable to give medical advice over the phone or by email. The CDC recommends that all people travelling outside of the US seek consultation about travel vaccines with a doctor or other practitioner specializing in travel medicine. Because of this, it is best to make a Pre-Travel Consultation appointment if you are unsure which vaccines or information is needed.
If I know which vaccines I need, do I need to make a Pre-Travel Consultation appointment? Consultations are highly recommended so that you get a fuller picture of your destination and the required vaccines. Consultations are also required for administration of Yellow Fever or Rabies vaccines.
Do you provide pre-travel consultations for children? We provide consultations and vaccinations for children 12 and over.
Do you accept medical insurance? While most insurance providers do not cover travel medicine services, we can provide you with an itemized bill to submit to your insurance company. Please note that payment for all consultation and vaccination services must be paid for up front by the patient.
What types of payment can I use? Payment for services rendered must be made on the day of the service. We accept cash, all credit cards and personal checks.
Can I make a Pre-Travel Consultation appointment at any Pharmaca location? Pre-Travel Consultations are currently available at all stores. Please note, however, that Yellow Fever vaccinations are unavailable at our Colorado Pharmaca locations. To inquire about vaccinations available at your Pharmaca, contact your local Pharmaca.
