Whether you’re headed to the campground or across the pond, there are a few travel essentials that can help keep you healthy, rested and ready to enjoy your adventures! We spoke with Heather Schrock, nutritional therapy practitioner at our store in Tigard, Ore., about her favorite travel recommendations.
“Even if you’re just going one time zone over, melatonin can be helpful to adjust your body to that hour,” Heather says. “Take it the first few nights you’re there to readjust, and then again the first couple nights home. It really helps with jet lag!” She recommends liquid Melatonin from Source Naturals or Melatonin Micro-Lozenges from Pharmaca.
“The more you build up your own healthy microbiome, the more protection you’ll have against food poisoning or stomach bugs while traveling,” Heather says. She recommends taking them before you leave and throughout the trip for maximum protection. Her favorites are Garden of Life Dr. Formulated Once Daily and Renew Life Ultimate Flora, which don’t require refrigeration (just keep them out of the heat).
“For any kind of stomach upset, activated charcoal is my go-to,” Heather says. “Especially if you’re traveling out of the country, you never know what kind of stomach bugs you might get exposed to. Charcoal helps pull out any impurities and alleviate the upset.” Find it from Solaray or KAL.
“It’s always a good idea to start building up your immunity before a trip,” Heather says. “The immune system doesn’t just turn on like a switch!” She recommends starting regular doses of an herbal formula, like Wishgarden Herbs Kick-Ass Immune or Host Defense MycoShield Spray a week ahead of time. The MycoShield (available in Cinnamon or Peppermint flavors) can be used all day long on travel days, or as often as you want, she says.
“I love the Avene line because it’s good for sensitive skin and doesn’t have that sunscreeny feel,” Heather says. She also really likes Trilipiderm All-Body Moisture Retention Crème with Vitamin D and SPF 30. “It feels good, it smells good and it offers transdermal vitamin D, which is vital when you’re protecting your skin from the sun. It’s my new favorite!”
