Founder Q&A with Peter Lamas

When it comes to experience in the hair industry, Peter Lamas has it in spades. His career has spanned decades—from training with Vidal Sassoon to being in-demand for hair and makeup for major fashion magazine shoots to opening his own salons in NYC—and he brings a wealth of knowledge to his current hair and skin care formulations. We chatted with Peter to learn more about how he got to this stage in his career.

Your background is in traditional, mainstream hair styling. How did you make the decision to focus your hair care on natural ingredients?

As I gained more experience in my career I became inquisitive, interested in learning the chemistry behind the products I was using and recommending to my clients. With time I learned about the hundreds of concerning hazardous chemicals found in personal care products.

I also learned these companies have carte blanche to use any ingredients or raw material without government review or approval. The beauty personal care industry is highly unregulated. There is no pre-product approval before a product hits the market and enters the home.

So early on I began working with a team of chemists to look into formulating healthier, more sensible and responsible personal care products that were safe to use while providing maximum benefits. At the time I decided to launch my line of products the consumer was not as attentive to the importance of healthy products as they are today.

I would like to have our brand to be known for having a conscience and caring for the welfare of consumers and the environment.

What are some of your favorite ingredients that you use in your products?

My personal favorite ingredients are our proprietary cocktail mix of antioxidants, our eastern herbal blend, fruit stem cells, hyaluronic acid, Bioton, Tricogen and highly refined essential oils.

What are the mistakes you think people most often make with their hair care routine?

  • Overusing styling utensils, flat irons, curling irons and blow dryers.
  • Not hydrating the hair enough with a good conditioner. Skin and hair are the same—they need hydration, hydration, hydration.
  • Not taking preventive measures such as using topical scalp treatments to prevent hair loss. Today scalp care is the latest craze in the beauty industry and has been my main focus from the beginning. It’s so important to start earlier rather than later in my opinion.
  • Using chemically formulated processing. Brazilian straightening, for example, uses strong and severe, harsh chemicals.
  • Applying styling products that are formulated with harsh chemicals; since they’re left on the hair and scalp, they can cause clogging of the hair follicles and pores and can even damage the hair follicle.
  • Using hairstyles that pull on the hairline, which creates stress.

Do you still do any hands-on hairstyling?

These days I maintain a small handful of high-profile clientele, and create the styles for the models on my QVC appearances. I also create the styles for our PR promotional campaigns and television appearances, doing before and afters.

At times I still take on consulting projects having to do with films. The last one was Jackie, featuring Natalie Portman.

What are some of the most exciting innovations in hair care you’ve seen recently?

In the not so far future you will not need to visit salons every six weeks to cover up the gray roots. It’s probable that scientists will develop a pill that prevents gray hair. They are right now looking into the leukemia drug Gleevec which causes people to restore hair color.

Researchers are also getting ready to introduce a sunscreen gelatin pill that works from the inside out to clean up cell damage from UV rays.

Finally, our “Youth Revival” Deep Conditioning Mask represents an innovation I’m very proud of. It’s a nourishing blend of five exotic oils, plant extracts, hyaluronic acid and butters, and is free from synthetics that are typically trusted to tame flyaways and “control” curls or kinks—and relies instead on its superior hydrating blend to enhance hair texture and help free the natural flow of the hair. Each of the five oils in the mask have a unique purpose with benefits to energize one’s stressed out, porous strands.
