To learn more about their formulation process—which relies heavily on whole foods—we spoke with Chad Kelly, national educator for NutriGold.
What does it mean when you say your vitamins are made from whole foods?
When we launch a product at NutriGold, we start by asking if it’s good enough for our families. Because that’s the only way we can justify giving it to yours.
In fact, Priya Khan, Ph.D. (NutriGold’s co-founder) originally created the company in part due to a negative personal experience she had taking a prenatal multivitamin that was marketed as “food” but actually contained synthetic forms of vitamins. As a result, Priya experienced unpleasant side effects, including nausea and digestive upset. It was actually through this negative experience, however, that Priya was inspired to create NutriGold—a brand of dietary supplements that truly are what they say they are—products that are ethically and transparently labeled so consumers can always make an informed purchasing decision.
As Priya found out the hard way, the definition of “whole-food” often varies greatly by brand. Many multivitamin products that are marketed as “food-based” are actually made by adding isolated synthetic vitamins to a “food” base that may include a combination of fruit and vegetable powders. Some brands will feed synthetic vitamins and inorganic minerals to Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast in an attempt to create “food” nutrients—but we do not use this model.
NutriGold multivitamins provide vitamins and minerals that are actually concentrated from organic whole foods such as moringa leaf and guava fruit. This is accomplished using processes that preserve the original structure of the nutrients and adding naturally occurring co-factors that enhance bioavailability.
At NutriGold, we believe “true” whole food vitamins are not made from or fortified with synthetic vitamins at any point during the manufacturing process. Other than our vitamin B12, NutriGold multivitamins do not contain any synthetic vitamins. We take pride in the fact that our multivitamin labels clearly show the natural source of each and every nutrient.
How does the sourcing/manufacturing of your vitamins ensure better bioavailability for the consumer?
NutriGold multivitamins feature a complex blend of whole foods that provide vitamins and minerals in their biologically active forms. Given that there are multiple forms of raw materials included in a NutriGold multivitamin, there are also multiple methods/processes involved in the creation of these whole-food nutrients.
For example, our iodine source is Hebridean seaweed, a highly nutritious edible seaweed that is wild harvested from the pristine sea lochs of the Hebridean Islands. This seaweed is very gently processed and dried to maintain not only the naturally occurring iodine, but also beneficial alginates, polyphenols and trace minerals.
Some of the whole foods in our multivitamins, including holy basil leaf and guava fruit, are concentrated using a patented water-based extraction process that uses no chemical solvents or excipients. Extraction of these active ingredients is performed at a low temperature which protects the integrity of the heat-sensitive nutrients in the organic, whole-food ingredients.
Many of our vitamin and mineral products, including our multivitamins, are now C.L.E.A.N. Certified. Part of earning this comprehensive, third-party certification is validating that our nutrients are processed in a way that maintains beneficial enzymes, which serves as evidence of bioavailability. In order to earn this certification, our products must be analyzed using CytoSolve technology to ensure natural enzymatic activity. This offers our customers non-biased assurance that our whole-food nutrients have not been over processed and the nutrients remain highly bioavailable.
Ultimately, the proof is in the pudding. Customers consistently report that our multivitamins are easy to digest and that they do not cause nausea like their synthetic counterparts. Customers also appreciate that our multivitamins are delivered in easy-to-swallow capsules without any binders, fillers or synthetic additives. Basically, NutriGold’s multivitamins provide everything you need and nothing you don’t.
Where do the whole foods that go into your vitamins come from?
We know that soil conditions and climate can greatly impact the quality and composition of our food, so we source ingredients from all over the globe. However, if we can obtain a high-quality, efficacious ingredient closer to home, then we feel that we owe it to the planet to do so.
US-grown goji berry is a great example of this commitment, as are the other 40+ foods and raw materials sourced here in the States. Our multivitamins feature a variety of organic foods from the US including organic apples, blueberries, beets, broccoli, carrots, cabbage and kale. Our vitamin A is from organic algae (D. salina), sustainably harvested in France. The organic amla fruit, mustard seed and holy basil leaf are all grown in India, where the climate and soil is ideal for their growth.
Regardless of country of origin, every ingredient is subject to 140+ quality checks by independent, third-party labs in the USA before it is approved for use in a NutriGold product.
In the spirit of authentic transparency, on our website we provide the country of origin for all raw materials used in our products as well as lot-specific Certificates of Analysis for every product summarizing results of third-party testing.
How do you ensure sustainability in your supply chain?
Sustainability is core value #1 at NutriGold. The natural world nourishes and sustains human life and we, in turn, have an obligation to protect and preserve it for future. From the certified sustainable marine oils in our omega-3 products to the tree-free sugarcane scraps used to craft our product cartons, from the mindfully sourced non-GMO ingredients to our support of organic farming, we are committed to doing what’s right not just for people, but also for the planet.
From day one, NutriGold has been determined to always prioritize people and planet even if it’s not profitable. Customers appreciate that our products are featured in amber glass bottles with recyclable lids complete with soy-based printing inks.
In addition to making sure our footprint is as small as possible, we work with organizations committed to the preservation of our ecological resources. Our industry partners include the Forest Stewardship Council, EarthPact, the Marine Stewardship Council, Friend of the Sea and our friends at the Non-GMO Project. It is our goal to do all of these things without passing on significant costs to our retail partners or consumers. This is part of what it means to be powered by integrity.
Your products have a lot of certifications. Which ones are you most proud of?
At NutriGold, we believe that to be trusted is greater than to be loved. However, we also know that trust has to be earned. One way that we earn our customer’s trust is through third-party certifications. We consciously and purposefully choose to work with independent labs and certifiers because they have no vested interest in the outcome, no commercial bias, function as consumer advocates and serve as our industry’s gatekeepers. Working with independent labs and certifiers not only provides us with objective evidence of the sustainability and overall quality of our ingredients, finished products, packaging materials and our processes, it helps assure consumers that what’s on the label is actually in the product and empowers them to make purchasing decisions with confidence. Most importantly, working with independent organizations allows us to express our uncompromising commitment to people and planet in the strongest way possible.
Our omega-3 fish oil products come from Alaskan Pollock that is wild-caught in the Bering Sea. Not only is our fish oil 100% USA-sourced and made, but it also comes from a fishery that is certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), a well-respected third-party verification for sustainable fishing practices.
In addition to being Non-GMO Project verified and certified organic, kosher and vegan, many of our vitamin and mineral products are also certified C.L.E.A.N., which is an acronym that stands for Conscious (or safe), Live (minimally processed and predominantly organic), Ethical (Non-GMO), Active (includes bioavailable enzymes as determined by CytoSolve technology) and Nourishing (as determined by the ANDI score).
