It’s Earth Month…time to celebrate a company that’s changing the way we package our natural beauty. Seed Phytonutrients, from the very beginning, made sure that sustainability and recyclability were a central mission in their line of skin and body care. In addition to sourcing seed oils from small organic farms, the company initiated an important conversation about how to package their resulting (totally luxurious) products in containers that would do substantially less harm to the earth.
We asked Shane Wolf, founder of Seed Phytonutrients, about the company’s impetus for its unique angle on packaging. “All the videos and photos out with plastic in our landfills and floating in our oceans are just devastating,” says Shane. “Did you know that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish?”
To challenge the industry’s waste practices and plastic usage, Seed partnered with Ecologic Brands, a pioneer in sustainable packaging that has focused on the fact that paper is far more likely to be recycled than plastic. “Our objective has been to reduce the amount of plastic that we need to use to begin with,” says Shane. “Because even when plastic is composed of post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials as it should be, it still may end up in the ocean or in a landfill.”
Thus began a journey to create the most eco-friendly packaging around. First they developed a shower-friendly paper shell made from 100 percent post-consumer recycled paper (that’s totally compostable when finished). Then they added a thin plastic liner (also made from post-consumer content) that is fully recyclable. The unique pump design then evacuates up to 98 percent of the product, which also contributes to a lighter carbon footprint. And when you’re done, you’ll find a package of heirloom seeds tucked inside—part of the company’s mission to help spread the word about the importance of seed diversity.
