The Three Ss of Good Sun Care

Slather on the SPFs

Before your next trip to the beach—or even before an afternoon in the backyard—brush up on the hows and whats of sun protection.

Reapply often. Experts recommend applying a full ounce of sunscreen (about the size of a shot glass) to skin before sun exposure. Reapply every few hours, and especially after sweating, bathing or toweling off. And don’t be fooled by high SPFs—even SPF 50 and higher needs to be reapplied on the same schedule.

Look for a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen. Turn to the Environmental Working Group’s Guide to Sunscreens for recommendations on sun care that protects against UVA and UVB rays without unsafe chemicals. On their list this year: sport sunscreens from Badger and Alba Botanica, Andalou Naturals’ Beauty Balms and Supergoop’s Lip Balms (along with many other Pharmaca favorites!).

Double up with moisture and/or coverage. An easy way to get extra protection—choose a moisturizer or mineral makeup that already has SPF protection, like Juice Beauty’s Tinted Moisturizers or jane iredale’s mineral foundations.

Supplement your skin

If you’ve played by the rules and still get sunburnt, you now have to contend with the free radicals that are produced by sun exposure—those same free radicals that can speed the aging process and cause oxidative stress.

Upping your antioxidant intake right after a burn can help quench the free radical damage, says Julie McGinnis, dietician at our south Boulder store. “Drink green tea, eat vitamin c-rich fruits and veggies and add anti-inflammatory turmeric to meals,” she says. For an extra antioxidant boost, try New Chapter’s Supercritical Antioxidants or Pharmaca’s Alpha Lipoic Acid. And if you’re feeling pain with the burn, other anti-inflammatories like bromelain or New Chapter’s Zyflamend can help calm the stinging.

Self tan!

Don’t feel like you have miss out on a great summer glow just because you’re applying sunscreen. Natural self-tanners are chock full of skin-nourishing ingredients that produce a healthy looking tan that lasts for days. First steps? Shaving and exfoliating skin to ensure even coverage, says Beth Walker Elwood, esthetician in downtown Boulder. Then, she says, apply in a circular motion to reduce the risk of streaks. “Doing it subtly is the way to go,” says Beth, who even recommends adding a bit to your body lotion for a more gradual build up. She loves Tantasia from jane iredale, a non-sticky self-tanning lotion with a great citrus scent.

Another way to get that sun kissed glow: Dr. Hauschka’s Translucent Bronze Concentrate, a liquid that’s easy to add to your facial moisturizer for extra rosy cheeks or an allover bronzed look.
