Trilogy: Where Rosehip Seed Oil Reigns

This unique NATRUE certified brand from New Zealand offers a broad selection of skin care that focuses on nurturing and healing skin. To learn more about their hero ingredient, rosehip seed oil, we spoke with Corinne Morley, Trilogy’s global education manager, who has a comprehensive industry background encompassing beauty therapy, training, research and product development

Why did Trilogy choose to focus on rosehip oil as its star ingredient?

Trilogy was founded in 2002 by New Zealand sisters Catherine de Groot and Sarah Gibbs. They had discovered the skin-loving properties of pure rosehip seed oil, which delivers high concentrations of natural actives to the skin. Following several months of trials with amazing results, they knew they had a future cosmetic star on their hands and launched the first Trilogy range of five rosehip oil products.

Today, the Trilogy collection consists of more than 50 products loved by customers and celebrities throughout the world, and the brand has an international reputation for producing ethical, sustainable and high-performance natural skin care.

Where do you source your rosehip seed oil from?

We’re very particular about the quality of rosehip oil we use, and while rosehips grow around the world, the best quality oil comes from the mountainous regions of Chile and Lesotho. Rosehip bushes grow wild and thrive in the inhospitable, mountainous landscapes. In these countries harvesting and selling wild rosehips is a valuable source of income for many people and as part of our ongoing commitment to social responsibility, we work closely with our supplier to ensure we operate within a fair trade structure.

To further support our growing demand for high-qualify certified organic rosehip oil, we invested in a Lesotho-based rosehip oil producer that has supplied us with rosehip oil since 2010. The family-owned business has a long history of organic rosehip production and the investment has helped them to expand and provide more fair employment opportunities for its community.

They then introduced us to the Mants’ase Children’s Home. As part of Trilogy’s give-back program that supports many different charities and community organisations, we are working to raise much-needed funds for the ongoing running costs of the Home. The relationship enables us to continue building a meaningful business with the country that gives so much to us.

What is it about your sources/processing that differentiates your rosehip oil from others?

The quality of our certified organic rosehip oil cemented our reputation as a pioneer in natural beauty oils. The richness of color, deep gold to red-orange, is a good indicator of quality due to high levels of antioxidant beta carotene. But we don’t rely purely on color to ensure quality. Every single barrel of rosehip oil is individually batch-tested to ensure a minimum 80 percent essential fatty acid content (omegas 3 and 6). These vital lipid compounds, which the body can’t produce for itself, help moisturize skin and improve elasticity and softness. In addition, our rosehip oil is not chemically refined; the seeds are cold-pressed and the oil filtered to remove any impurities. And we only press the seeds and not the whole fruit, which ensures the highest concentration of actives.
In addition, to obtain BioGro Organic Certification for our oils and NATRUE Natural Cosmetics Certification for our skin care, we must submit raw material documentation showing the purity and minimal processing of our ingredients.

What are the most important attributes of rosehip oil?

Its skin-loving natural actives are highly effective at not only replenishing dry and dehydrated skin but also helping to balance oily skin. Essential fatty acids (omegas 6 and 9), antioxidants and vitamins deeply nourish skin, helping repair and restore radiantly healthy skin. A unique component of rosehip oil is tretinoin (the synthetic/animal version is retinol) which provides gentle effective skin regeneration. Independent clinical studies from a prominent Australian research laboratory show that even in severe cases, Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil helps improve the visible characteristics and appearance of scars, stretchmarks and wrinkles.

Aging skin, uneven skin tone, sun damage and acne scarring will also benefit greatly from using rosehip oil. Men love it as much as women and it’s the ideal choice for moms-to-be who want to keep their growing tummy smooth—and perfect for baby’s delicate skin too!
