If you’re looking for makeup that gives a natural, healthy look that’s also made with safe ingredients that are beneficial for your skin, say hello to mineral makeup! The term “mineral makeup” applies to makeup made of ultra-finely milled pure minerals, without the preservatives and synthetic chemicals often found in traditional makeup. We checked in with Bianca Goodrich, beauty expert at Pharmaca in Beverly Hills, to see why she’s a big fan.
Mineral makeup is made with skin-friendly ingredients
Mineral makeup is made from pure elements like iron oxide and mica (color and coverage), titanium dioxide and zinc oxide (SPF sun protection), pearl powder (luminosity), calcium salts (pigments) and kaolin clay (absorbs excess oil and keeps colors intact).
These ingredients are all found in the safest categories (“low health concern”) by the Environmental Working Group (EWG). This makes mineral makeup good for all skin types, even sensitive skin, explains Bianca. Additional skin-nourishing botanicals—such as pomegranate extract, plankton, aloe or green tea extract, which provide antioxidant benefits and hydration—are often included in mineral makeup formulations.
Mineral makeup leaves out the bad stuff
You won’t find preservatives like parabens (that mimic estrogen and may cause hormone imbalances) or artificial fragrances that can aggravate allergies and skin (and can contain undisclosed chemicals) in mineral makeup. Petroleum-based products like mineral oil or paraffin wax are a no-no, and talc is out too, since there is concern about its link to asbestos.
Mineral makeup provides a flawless look
Choosing the right brush is key for successful mineral makeup application. For powders, Bianca recommends using a dense powder or kabuki brush that picks up powder and evenly apply it to skin.
Try a jane iredale Gold the Handi Brush or Antonym Cosmetics Kabuki Brush (vegan-certified) for loose and pressed powder foundations. Osmosis+Colour Angled Blush Brush works well for powder blush and bronzers, and for eyeshadow, EcoTools Enhancing Eye Brush Set has everything you need to create a natural or dramatic smoky eye. Mineral cream or liquid foundations (great for dry skin) can be dabbed on and blended with your finger (or use a jane iredale Foundation Brush for especially flawless results).
Matching a color to your skin tone is never an issue with jane iredale PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation, which comes in 24 shades, or their PurePressed Blush, available in 10 natural-looking colors (check out our favorite jane iredale mineral cosmetic products here). Or turn your powder foundation into a tinted skin moisturizer by blending it with a beauty balm like Andalou Naturals Perfecting BB Beauty Balm. Because these products are so finely milled, your skin will never look like it’s coated in powder. And it works on all skin types, because natural clays help absorb excess oil and nourishing botanical extracts gently moisturize.
